The history of Knysna began in the year 1804 during which George Rex purchased an estate, then known as Melkhoutkraal, on the shores of the lagoon and moved his entire family and large entourage.  Millwood House Museum in Queen Street houses material and artifacts relating to the history of the town and George Rex, rumoured to have been the illegitimate son of King George III.

There are many attractions in the surrounding area, the most spectacular being the Knysna forest.  The forest is the largest indigenous forest in South Africa and comprises of tall local and exotic tree species of which some are many years old.  The extensive forest is vast and dense in places making it almost impenetrable in certain places.  Small antelope species can be found along with a large variety of birds, such as the famous Knysna Loerie.
